Why Your Social Media is Negotiating Against You
Valuable insights for negotiators come in many forms, but following the acquired wisdom of those who preceded us is always a great place to start. Sometimes, that wisdom comes from the unlikeliest of places - like a 1940s propaganda poster.
The Original 'Privacy Setting'
The catchy phrase 'Loose Lips Sink Ships' was the backbone of a World War II advertising campaign. It was designed to caution citizens that casual chatter in a pub or on a street corner could be overheard by spies, leading to literal disaster at sea.
Fast forward to today, and the 'spies' aren't lurking in shadows - they are scrolling through your Instagram feed. In the era of oversharing, the message has never been more relevant.
A $200,000 Cautionary Tale
Workers on the controversial Light Rail Project on the Gold Coast recently provided a masterclass in how not to handle public perception.
A few traffic controllers (often called 'lollypop workers') took to social media to brag about their lifestyle. The posts included:
- Pictures of paychecks showing earnings upwards of $200,000 per year.
- Videos of their 'monster trucks' purchased with project wages.
- Stories implying the work was, shall we say, less than grueling.
The result? A predictable media firestorm. The Courier Mail ran with the headline:
“Staggering cost of Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 wages”.
Because the project was already plagued by delays and massive budget overruns, these posts acted like a match in a powder keg.
The 'Shovel' Stereotype
These workers are, by definition, highly visible. Commuters stuck in traffic see them every day. Often, what they see is a group of ten people leaning on shovels, watching one person in a hole.
While we can offer some empathy - much of that 'inactivity' is actually down to waiting for materials, instructions, or previous stages to be completed - the public doesn't see the logistics. They see the $200k pay check in a video they just watched on TikTok.
The Negotiator’s Takeaway
Unsurprisingly, the posts were scrubbed from the internet once the heat turned up. But the damage was done. By boasting about 'playing the system', these workers didn't just lose public goodwill; they handed their 'negotiating partner' (the taxpayers and the government) all the ammunition needed to tighten the purse strings.
The Golden Rule of Digital Negotiation: Everything you post is a data point. When you brag about how well you've done out of a deal, that information inevitably finds its way back to the person on the other side of the table.
Bottom Line: If you've negotiated a great deal, enjoy it quietly. Boasting about your leverage today is the quickest way to lose it tomorrow.
